Travel writing is really tough.  Some of the best professional writers have been known to totally strike out when attempting it. You have to sort through a whirlwind of impressions and zoom in on a manageable, yet meaningful snippet of experience that tells the larger story. You must bring out the people and places while vigilantly avoiding all the travel cliches lurking in your subconscious.
